Cally Bristow from Scunthorpe is Britain's Smartest Young Driver
26 July 2006
Cally, aged 24, was the outright winner of the final of the Smrt2Drv (Smart To Drive) competition, run by motorway service area provider Moto and driving school BSM, which was held at the top-secret MIRA Proving Ground in Warwickshire.
She was among 25 finalists who had to demonstrate their skills behind the wheel in a series of manoeuvres that tested their ability to overtake at speed, judge braking distances on both wet and dry surfaces and to control a car through a slalom course on a wet, greasy surface.
Cally proved she was the best of the bunch with her consistently excellent performance across all areas of the tests and came away from the competition the proud owner of a Daihatsu Sirion 1.3SE worth almost £9,000.
Cally, of West End, Garthorpe in Scunthorpe said: “It was a fantastic competition and I’m delighted to have won. The standard of driving among the finalists was very high, even though most of us haven’t been driving for that long, and the tests were very demanding.
“I think it’s very important that young drivers take the time to learn the skills that will help keep them alive on the roads. There’s a great temptation to pass your test and get out there thinking you know it all – and you don’t.”
More than 1,000 under-25 year-olds entered Smrt2Drv in an on-line competition with the top 25 being invited to compete in the final which took place under the watchful eye of BSM instructors who scored the competitors on their skill, judgement and ability.
